Yoho, BC Ski Touring

14-16 January we skied to Lake O Hara alpine club cabin in eastern BC. We spent 3 days in the area with the goal of exploring one of the surrounding valleys. After studying the map and considering current snow conditions we have chosen Lake McArthur. We were first group to hike that up after 9-10 Jan storm so we had to break the trail and carefully choose safest way up to the alpine lake. The avvy rating was on 1-2 but with strong wind above the tree line in the local area.

Skiing a moderate steep gully in decent snow (Low McArthur Trail)

Discussion before hitting a bigger terrain

Andrej cutting down a wind slab (slab just moved down couple meters as there was no steep terrain)

The "plate' was about 15m wide and up to 60 cm high, excellent warning and reminder! This size of slab avalanche would have much bigger consequences in steep terrain and longer slope. We will remain very conservative by choosing the terrain and ski lines (as always).

Zuzka skiing excellent snow.
